Cannabis policing ‘worst waste of taxpayer money’, former PM Helen Clark says

Strict policing of cannabis is “the worst waste of taxpayer money” in New Zealand, former Prime Minister Helen Clark says.

“For me, it’s just a no-brainer to stop wasting our taxpayers’ money with police helicopters hovering over the Kiwi bush, hounding ordinary citizens who are having a joint of cannabis rather than a glass of wine, hunting down the Kiwis who are desperate for some kind of relief for a medical condition. Let’s stop all that… lets put it into something better,” she said.

Clark made the comments at an NZ Drug Foundation hui over Zoom on Wednesday, where she said she supported a “Yes” vote at the upcoming referendum because it would improve public health, reduce criminal injustice, and cut wasted spending.

“I’m absolutely convinced that bringing it into open in a controlled way is the way to go,” she said.
